Outreach Chair Report
In my role as the Outreach Chair for the Fall of 2023, my primary objective is to facilitate our organization's outreach efforts to diverse populations, delivering vital information on health-related topics and emphasizing the significance of effective medication management. One of our recent initiatives involved a dedicated event held at the Big E, focusing on educating the public about RSV, COVID, and flu vaccines. Our team engaged with community members, sparking conversations about the crucial role of vaccination in disease prevention and control.
Furthermore, we are planning a visit to the Newington Senior Center to conduct a presentation on cardiovascular issues, with a specific focus on hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Our presentation covers both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to effectively manage these conditions. We aim to enlighten the geriatric community about the importance of consistent adherence to antihypertensive medications such as ACEs/ARBs and cholesterol-controlling drugs like statins. We stress the pivotal role of lifestyle modifications, including exercise, heart-healthy dietary choices, and smoking cessation, in achieving successful treatment outcomes.
In our commitment to reaching a diverse audience, we've also set our sights on engaging with younger individuals. Later in the semester, we will collaborate with Husky Sport, an organization dedicated to underserved children, with a strong emphasis on physical activity and engagement.
Our collaborative efforts will manifest in a series of workshops, each addressing crucial topics such as managing infections, handling mosquito bites, using sunscreen for sun protection, dealing with poison ivy, managing common allergies, and understanding the use of epinephrine pens. In addition to these informative workshops, we plan to include interactive activities like Kahoot games and engaging case presentations. To add a personal touch to our interactions, we'll provide mini smiley face plastic capsules for the children, allowing them to inscribe notes to give to their family members.
